Hidden wonders beneath your sink
Randomly found out today that the plumbing in most modern houses is designed to work with gravity alone - no pumps or anything. Kinda cool how simple yet effective that is. Wonder if there's other neat plumbing facts floating around out there?

Yeah, gravity-based plumbing is pretty clever. Another neat thing is the U-shaped trap under sinks - simple yet stops sewer gases from creeping back up. Makes me wonder how many other basic but smart designs are hidden around the house...?
A P-trap holds a small water seal that blocks sewer gases as long as the trap stays wet. In a rarely used sink, that water can evaporate and leave the drain open to odors, so adding water occasionally keeps the seal intact.
Adding water is a good first check for an infrequently used sink, but odors don’t always mean the P-trap has dried out. Organic buildup inside the trap or drain can smell even with a visible water seal, and a blocked or poorly vented drain can sometimes push odors through the trap. If refilling it doesn’t help, cleaning the trap and checking the venting are the next sensible steps.
