That's a solid point—I actually did something similar with foam for wall sconces and trim details. Worked great and saved cash.

Papier-mâché can look pretty good, but honestly, I'd be cautious about using it on a basement ceiling. Even with a solid paint job, basements can get damp or humid, and papier-mâché doesn't always hold up well in those conditions. Foam's definitely safer there. If you're after something lightweight but sturdier, maybe try thin plywood or MDF cutouts? I've used MDF for decorative ceiling panels before—holds paint beautifully and lasts forever, even in trickier spaces like basements...

Totally agree with this. I tried papier-mâché once for a basement project (was making some faux stone arches), and even though I sealed it pretty well, after about a year it started getting soft spots from humidity. Ended up redoing it with foam insulation board—way easier to shape, paint stuck nicely, and it's held up great so far. MDF sounds solid too, but foam's probably your best bet if you're watching the budget...

Foam insulation board is such a lifesaver in damp spaces. I've seen papier-mâché and even MDF warp or swell over time, especially if humidity sneaks in. Foam's lightweight too, so it's easier to install overhead without extra supports. Sounds like your fantasy hangout is gonna turn out amazing—can't wait to see how it shapes up!

Totally agree about foam boards being the way to go—especially for those of us who aren't exactly renovation pros (guilty as charged...). I tried MDF panels in my laundry room ceiling once, and let's just say it ended up looking more like a warped pirate ship deck than the sleek modern look I'd hoped for. Foam boards saved my sanity afterward; they're forgiving, easy to trim, and you don't need Hulk-like strength to handle them overhead. Your fantasy hideout definitely sounds promising—hope it turns out better than my pirate laundry room fiasco.

Haha, your pirate laundry room story made me chuckle... reminds me of when I ambitiously tried installing wooden slats on my bedroom ceiling to get that cozy cabin vibe. Let's just say the end result was less "rustic retreat" and more "abandoned barn." Foam boards definitely sound like a smarter choice, especially if you're going for fantasy vibes—lightweight and easy to shape into cool textures or patterns.

Speaking of fantasy-inspired ceilings, have you thought about adding some subtle LED strip lighting behind the foam boards? I did something similar in a client's basement once, and it created this awesome glowing effect that felt straight out of a Tolkien novel. Could be a neat way to level up your hideout without too much hassle. Are you leaning more towards a specific theme—like medieval tavern or enchanted forest—or just keeping it generally fantasy-ish?
