"Ended up adding a few pendant lights with warmer Edison bulbs, and it made a huge difference."

Yeah, Edison bulbs are great for that cozy vibe. I did something similar in my attic hangout - fairy lights alone were too dim, but mixing in a couple Edison pendants really balanced things out nicely.

Edison bulbs do have charm, but honestly, I found them a bit too industrial for my fantasy-themed nook. Ended up using Moroccan lanterns instead...the patterns they cast on the ceiling really elevated the magical vibe. Might be worth considering if you're after something different.

Totally agree, Moroccan lanterns have a unique charm. Another option I've seen work well is fairy lights tucked behind sheer fabric or draped loosely across wooden beams. It softens the space and creates a subtle, enchanted forest feel without leaning too industrial. Might be worth experimenting with different fabric textures or colors to tweak the atmosphere a bit...

Fairy lights behind fabric is a great shout - I did something similar in our old Victorian attic. Thought I'd nailed it until my cat decided the draped fabric was her personal hammock... woke up to a feline-shaped lump dangling from the ceiling at 3am. Lesson learned: secure your fabric well, folks. But seriously, mixing textures like velvet or gauzy linen can really dial up that cozy fantasy vibe without feeling too theme-parkish.

Haha, your cat story hits home - I had a similar mishap when I tried draping sheer fabric with fairy lights in my basement nook. Thought I'd created this dreamy, whimsical hideaway until it became a spider magnet... apparently spiders also appreciate cozy, magical vibes. I'd second securing the fabric tightly and maybe giving it a regular dust-off. Mixing in heavier materials like velvet can help balance things out and discourage unwanted guests.
