Have you thought about dimmable LEDs? We tried Edison bulbs in our basement at first, and while the vibe was awesome, I kept squinting during game nights. Switched to dimmable LEDs hidden behind wooden beams—still cozy, but way easier on the eyes.

I get the appeal of LEDs, especially for practical lighting, but honestly, they can sometimes feel a bit too modern or clinical for a fantasy-inspired space. We did something similar in our attic hangout, and while the dimming was handy, it just didn't have that warm, flickering glow we wanted. Ended up going with battery-powered candles tucked into sconces and lanterns around the room—no wiring hassle, and the vibe is spot-on for fantasy themes. Plus, they're surprisingly bright when grouped together. If you're worried about eye strain during games, maybe combine the candles with a few strategically placed lamps or wall lights? That way you keep the cozy atmosphere without sacrificing visibility. Just something to think about before committing fully to LEDs...

Battery candles are a solid idea, especially if you're going for that tavern-y vibe. But honestly, hidden LEDs behind wood beams sounds pretty clever too—probably gives off a nice indirect glow without being harsh. Maybe you could mix both? LEDs for general lighting and candles for atmosphere. Either way, sounds like your basement's gonna be the go-to hangout spot...invite me over for game night sometime, lol.

I did something similar for a client last year—mixed battery candles with hidden LED strips behind reclaimed beams. The LEDs gave a subtle, warm glow, perfect for general lighting, while the candles added that cozy flicker. Turned out amazing...definitely nailed the fantasy tavern feel.

I tried something similar in my attic space, but on a tighter budget. Instead of reclaimed beams, I used stained pine boards and hid inexpensive LED rope lights behind them. Battery candles were a bit pricey for me, so I opted for tea lights in thrifted lanterns—still got that cozy flicker effect without breaking the bank. It turned out pretty decent, though I'm curious how long your battery candles last before needing replacements...
