WHEN DOES A "WEEKEND PLUMBING JOB" EVER ACTUALLY TAKE A WEEKEND?

I hear you—sometimes even the “premium” stuff doesn’t last like it should. I’ve tried using some reclaimed copper pipe for a small repair, and honestly, it worked fine, but tracking down the right fittings was a pain. Eco-friendly options sound great in theory, but I feel like they’re still hit or miss for plumbing. Maybe for non-critical stuff, but I’d be nervous using them behind a wall.

Honestly, I’m with you on being wary of eco-friendly plumbing behind the walls—there’s just too much at stake if something fails. I’ve seen a few “green” PEX alternatives that claim to be durable, but the long-term data isn’t really there yet. For visible or easily accessible spots, I’ll use reclaimed or sustainable materials, but for anything hidden, I stick with tried-and-true. It’s frustrating when even high-end stuff doesn’t hold up, though. Maybe one day the industry will catch up and we won’t have to choose between sustainability and peace of mind...

- Totally get the hesitation. I keep hearing about “green” PEX too, but like you said,

“the long-term data isn’t really there yet.”

- For me, it’s all about cost vs. risk. If I’m spending extra for eco-friendly, I want to know it’ll last at least as long as the regular stuff.
- Anyone actually had a “weekend” plumbing job stay on schedule? Every time I try, something unexpected pops up—usually behind a wall or under the floor.
- Curious if anyone’s found a budget-friendly material that’s both sustainable and proven reliable for hidden work? Or is it just wishful thinking at this point...

Ha, if a “weekend” plumbing job actually took a weekend, I’d probably faint from shock. Last time I tried, I found knob-and-tube wiring and a squirrel’s nest in the same wall. As for sustainable and proven, copper’s still king in my old place—pricey, but at least I know it’ll outlast me. Haven’t seen a budget-friendly, eco option that doesn’t come with a side of anxiety yet...

I get the copper love, but has anyone here actually tried PEX? I know it’s not as “forever” as copper, but it’s supposed to be way easier for DIY and less expensive. I’m just starting out and the idea of wrestling with copper pipes is kinda intimidating. Is the anxiety with PEX about leaks or something else? Just curious if it’s really that risky or if it’s just old-school vs new-school thinking.
