WHEN DOES A "WEEKEND PLUMBING JOB" EVER ACTUALLY TAKE A WEEKEND?

I tried to save the old galvanized under my bathroom sink once - bad idea. Ended up with a cracked elbow and a mess that took three trips to the store. Now, I just go straight to PEX too. It’s not “period correct,” but neither is spending my whole weekend cursing at pipes.

That sounds all too familiar. I used to think patching up old pipes would save a few bucks, but honestly, the time and frustration just aren’t worth it. PEX isn’t original, but neither is having to fix a “repair” every six months. Sometimes practicality wins out over tradition.

I used to be a stickler for keeping everything original - until I bought a 1920s duplex and spent more time under the kitchen sink than in my own bed. After the third emergency call about a burst galvanized pipe, I caved and went with PEX for the next reno.

As for hiding new pipes, it’s definitely possible, but it’s rarely as easy as the contractor says. In one place, we ran PEX through old chaseways behind baseboards - looked clean, but getting those boards off without splintering them was a nightmare. Another time, we boxed in a run along the ceiling and painted it to match the trim. Not invisible, but it blended in enough that most tenants never noticed.

Honestly, unless you’re doing a full gut job, there’s always some compromise. You can get creative with soffits or chaseways, but sometimes you just have to accept that a little modern convenience is worth more than perfect period detail... especially if you like sleeping through the night without hearing water hammer at 2am.
