Does anyone actually have long-term experience with the matte black finishes? I’ve only used chrome and brushed nickel, mostly because I worry about fingerprints and scratches. Also—has anyone tried swapping out Kohler stuff? I’ve found their parts a bit pricier and sometimes harder to track down, but maybe that’s just me.

Matte black’s actually held up better than I expected in a few remodels I’ve done—fingerprints aren’t as bad as you’d think, but scratches can show if you’re rough on it. It’s not bulletproof, but honestly, chrome gets water spots just as fast. Kohler parts... yeah, they’re a pain sometimes. I’ve had to hunt down some weird valves more than once. Pricey, but their stuff does last if you can stomach the hassle.

Totally get what you mean about Kohler—tracking down replacement parts can be a headache, but once it’s in, it just works. I’ve had the same struggle with matte black too. It hides fingerprints better than chrome, but yeah, scratches are the tradeoff. Still, if you’re careful, it holds up fine and looks sharp. Don’t let the hassle turn you off—sometimes paying a bit more upfront really does save trouble down the line.

I totally hear you on the matte black—looks amazing, but yeah, it’s not invincible. I usually recommend a quick step-by-step for folks worried about longevity: 1) check the finish warranty (some brands cover scratches), 2) use a gentle cleaner, and 3) avoid abrasive sponges. For toilets, I’ve had decent luck with Toto—less flashy than Kohler but super reliable. Curious if anyone’s tried mixing finishes in one bathroom? Sometimes that helps balance out wear and tear without sacrificing style...

Mixing finishes is actually something I’ve been playing around with lately. I used to be all about matching everything—like, chrome on chrome on chrome—but honestly, it started to feel a little sterile? Last reno, I went with matte black faucets and brushed nickel towel bars, and it’s kind of cool how it breaks things up. Plus, when the black faucet inevitably gets a few nicks, it doesn’t stand out as much since there’s already a mix going on.

I’ve had pretty good luck with Toto too. They’re not flashy, but they just work. Kohler’s always tempting because their designs are so sleek, but I swear every time I go down that road, I end up paying more for style than substance. Maybe that’s just me being unlucky with Kohler stuff though.

Has anyone tried those new “living” finishes? Like the ones that are supposed to patina over time? I’m curious if they actually look good after a year or if it just ends up looking like you forgot to clean your bathroom for six months. Sometimes I think the whole “embrace the wear” thing is just clever marketing... but maybe that’s my inner cynic talking.

Also, for cleaning matte black—I learned the hard way that even paper towels can leave micro scratches if you’re not careful. Microfiber cloths are my new best friend for that stuff. Anyone else have weird cleaning hacks for keeping finishes looking decent?
