remodeling on a tight budget - any clever hacks?
I’ve definitely tried to stretch leftover materials in weird ways - sometimes it works, sometimes not so much. I once used tile adhesive to patch a chunk of drywall (don’t recommend, it dried like concrete and sanding was a nightmare). Curious if anyone’s managed to repurpose grout for anything clever? I always end up with half a bag after tiling and hate tossing it...
- Been there with the leftover grout - always a half bag mocking me from the garage shelf.
- Tried mixing a little into outdoor planters for extra weight... worked until I wanted to move them. Regret.
- Used some to fill cracks in my old concrete steps. Not perfect, but held up better than I expected.
- Honestly, sometimes I just accept defeat and use it as a doorstop. The stuff is basically a brick after a while.
Don’t feel bad about the tile adhesive drywall patch - at least you tried. Half my “hacks” end up as future cautionary tales too.
That leftover grout is like the house project equivalent of the one sock that never finds its pair - just sits there, taunting you. I’ve tried the crack-filling trick too. On my old porch steps, it wasn’t pretty, but honestly, the steps are still holding up, so I’ll call it a win.
One thing I learned the hard way: don’t try to use old grout as any kind of caulk substitute around windows. It sets fast, shrinks weirdly, and basically looks like you glued sand to your trim. Lesson learned.
I did once use a bit of grout to patch a chunk missing from a plaster wall (not a perfect color match, but behind a bookshelf, who cares). It set up rock solid and hasn’t budged since. Seems like most of these “hacks” are just creative ways of saying “I didn’t want to drive to the dump.” But hey, sometimes it works out.
Leftover grout really does have a way of haunting the garage shelf, doesn’t it? I’ve had similar luck patching up random wall dings - if you sand it down after, it blends in better than you’d think. One thing I’d add: if you’re using old grout for patch jobs, mist the area with water first so it sticks better. Also, I tried mixing a bit of leftover paint into white grout once to get a closer color match. Not perfect, but less obvious than bright white on beige walls. Sometimes these hacks are just about making do with what’s on hand.
Mixing paint into grout? That’s actually pretty clever, never would’ve thought of that. I totally get the “making do” part - sometimes it feels like half my projects are just finding ways to use up random leftovers. I’m about to tackle some patching myself, so it’s good to know sanding helps it blend. Love these scrappy solutions, honestly.
