If your closet could talk: the saga of the missing shoe

I get the appeal of wire racks, but honestly, I’ve found they’re not always the most efficient use of space - especially in older houses where closets are oddly shaped. Custom cubbies can be a pain to install, sure, but if you’ve got a lot of smaller stuff (like, say, shoes or hats), it’s a real game changer. Plus, wire racks are dust magnets. I pulled one out last year and found a whole layer of fuzz behind it... not exactly what you want near your clothes.

Totally get what you mean about wire racks collecting dust - mine was basically a lint trap. I swapped mine for some cheap cube organizers from Target, and it made a huge difference. Not as fancy as custom cubbies, but way easier on the wallet and still keeps shoes and hats in check. Only downside is you lose a bit of hanging space, but honestly, I’d rather have less clutter on the floor.

I get the appeal of cube organizers - they’re super easy and cheap, and I’ve used them for a bunch of stuff. But I actually went the opposite route in my closet. Instead of giving up hanging space, I grabbed a couple of those over-the-door shoe pockets (the clear kind). They’re not pretty, but you can see everything at a glance, and they don’t eat up floor or shelf space. Plus, no more shoes hiding under sweaters or getting dusty. If you don’t mind the look, it’s a quick fix that keeps things off the ground without sacrificing hangers.

Funny, I’ve seen those clear over-the-door pockets in a ton of rentals and they’re always packed with way more than shoes - scarves, chargers, even snacks once (don’t ask). They’re definitely practical. Personally, I’m a sucker for maximizing vertical space, so I actually mounted a few wire shelves up high for the stuff I rarely use. It’s not the prettiest solution either, but it keeps the floor clear and makes the closet feel less cramped. Guess it’s all about what you can live with visually vs. what actually works day-to-day.

Not a fan of the over-the-door pockets myself - every time I tried them, the door wouldn’t close right and stuff kept falling out. Wire shelves are solid, but I always end up forgetting what’s up there and then it just collects dust. Ended up switching to bins under the bed for stuff I rarely touch. Not exactly pretty either, but at least it's out of sight and easy to get to when I finally need it.
