I was halfway through tearing out cabinets yesterday—dust everywhere, tools scattered around—and it suddenly hit me: wait a second, does my home insurance even cover this kind of stuff? Like if something goes sideways (god forbid), am I on my own or what? I mean, I'm not knocking down walls or anything too crazy, but still...accidents happen. I remember a buddy of mine had some plumbing disaster mid-reno and ended up paying outta pocket big-time because his policy didn't cover DIY mishaps.

Now I'm kinda paranoid. Maybe should've thought of this before starting, lol. But here we are. Anyone been through something similar or know how insurance usually handles these kinds of projects?

Been there myself a couple years back—got halfway through ripping out my old bathroom vanity before it occurred to me to check insurance. Turns out, my policy was pretty vague about DIY stuff. When I called, they said minor cosmetic renos were fine, but anything involving plumbing or electrical was a gray area.

Yeah, that sounds painfully familiar. My neighbor flooded his basement trying to move a pipe himself, and insurance wouldn't touch it. I'd definitely give your insurer a quick call just to be sure...better safe than sorry.
