If you go that route, stick with well-reviewed options and check the warranty. For under-deck supports and anything structural, I still lean toward high-grade stainless, even if it means swapping o...

I hadn’t even considered UV exposure making the composite fasteners brittle—good to know. When you mention swapping out stainless hardware every few years, is that mostly for visible stuff, or do you end up replacing hidden fasteners too? I’m trying to figure out if it’s worth budgeting for regular hardware replacement, or if that’s just overkill.

I’ve wondered about this too, especially since my place is right on the coast and the salt air just eats through everything. In my experience, the visible stuff (railings, exposed bolts, etc.) gets swapped out more often—mostly for looks, honestly, since rust stains are a pain. The hidden fasteners seem to last longer unless there’s a leak or water intrusion. I wouldn’t say you need to budget for a full hardware overhaul every few years, but maybe set aside a little for touch-ups and the occasional surprise. Anyone else had hidden fasteners go bad faster than expected?

Yeah, I’ve had a couple surprises with hidden fasteners, actually. Thought everything was fine until a deck board started wiggling—turns out the screws underneath had rusted clean through. Now I check under things way more often, just in case. Salt air really doesn’t mess around.

Hidden fasteners are like the ninjas of home repairs—sneaky until they’re not. Had a similar thing with some “stainless” deck screws that turned out to be, uh, optimistic marketing. Salt air just laughs at hardware that’s not truly up for it.

- Swapping to marine-grade fasteners basically became my new hobby.
- Regular checkups are a must, but wow, crawling under decks is not my idea of a good time.
- Budget-wise, I always pad extra for surprise corrosion and eco-friendly replacements... learned that the hard way.

Curious—anyone ever found a brand of fastener that actually holds up long-term by the coast? Or is it just inevitable rust roulette?

I hear you on the “stainless” screws—some of those labels are just wishful thinking. I’ve had better luck with silicon bronze, but even then, coastal weather finds a way. Have you factored in the cost of replacing hardware every few years into your renovation budget? It’s wild how fast things can corrode out there.
