how often do you actually check your deck for safety?

Composite decking can definitely be a solid option, especially if you're tired of the yearly maintenance routine. But honestly, it isn't completely foolproof either. I've seen some composite decks start to fade or warp after a while—usually due to poor installation or lower-quality brands. Have you considered pressure-treated lumber with regular sealing instead? It's more budget-friendly, and if you're already checking every couple years, that might be enough to catch issues before they become embarrassing (or dangerous). I've had clients who've gone both ways... some swear by composite for convenience, others regret the upfront cost when simpler solutions could've worked just fine. How much direct sun or moisture does your deck typically get? That might help narrow down what's worth investing in long-term.

I've had composite decking at my place for about 8 years now, and honestly, it's held up pretty well. But I do agree it's not totally maintenance-free. Mine gets a ton of direct sun, and I've noticed some fading over the years—not terrible, but noticeable. Pressure-treated lumber can be great too, but sealing every couple of years got old fast for me. Guess it depends on how much time you're willing to spend on upkeep vs. upfront cost...

I've been following this thread because I'm thinking about redoing our deck next spring, and honestly, the upkeep thing has me a bit torn. My sister went with composite decking about five years ago, and while she loves not having to seal it every summer, she did mention the fading issue too—especially in spots where the sun hits hardest. She jokes that her deck now has a "natural ombre" look going on, haha.

On the other hand, my neighbor swears by pressure-treated lumber. He says checking it regularly for safety and sealing it every couple of years is just part of his homeowner routine—like cleaning gutters or changing smoke detector batteries. But knowing myself... I'd probably slack off after year two and then panic when I realize it's been ages since I checked for loose boards or splinters.

Curious though, for those who've had composite decks longer—do you find yourself checking less often because you assume it's lower maintenance? Or does the fading and wear actually make you more vigilant?

We went composite about seven years ago, and honestly, I probably do check it less often now. At first, I was still in that "wood deck" mindset, inspecting it every spring. But after a couple of seasons with no real issues, I relaxed quite a bit. Now it's more casual—just a quick glance when I'm out grilling or hanging out back there. The fading is noticeable, sure, but structurally it's held up great.

- Interesting take, but isn't there still hardware underneath to worry about?
- Composite boards might hold up fine, but screws, joists, and supports can still rust or weaken over time.
- I'd probably still do a thorough check every year or two just to be safe...
