Brightening up a room: led strips vs. smart bulbs?
I totally get the struggle with the adhesive on those cheaper LED strips. Mine started peeling off the underside of my cabinets after a few months - one morning I found the whole thing dangling like some sad party streamer. I tried double-sided tape, but that just made it look messier. Honestly, I think the humidity in my kitchen didn’t help either.
Have you noticed any issues with the adhesive on the cheaper LED strips? Mine started peeling after a year, which was kind of a pain.
I’m with you on the smart bulbs. I was skeptical at first, but the new ones with higher CRI are actually decent for color accuracy. I layered two in my little galley kitchen and it made a huge difference - no more weird blue shadows on my food. Plus, I like being able to tweak the color temp depending on whether I’m cooking or just hanging out.
That said, I do miss the “wow” factor of strip lights under the cabinets. They look so sleek when they’re new and actually sticking where they’re supposed to. But yeah, swapping out strips every couple years feels wasteful. I hadn’t even thought about the plastic waste until you mentioned it, but now it’s bugging me.
If only there was a magic solution that combined the best of both worlds - maybe smart bulbs with a built-in strip effect? Or strips with better adhesives that don’t give up after a year. Until then, I guess I’ll keep experimenting... and maybe keep a roll of painter’s tape handy just in case.
Honestly, I’ve started to think the adhesive on those strips is just a cruel joke. I had one fall into my sink mid-dishwashing - talk about timing. I get the appeal of the under-cabinet glow, but if I’m constantly re-sticking them, is it really worth it? Smart bulbs are less flashy, but at least they don’t try to escape in the middle of the night. Maybe I’m just getting lazy, but I’ll take reliability over aesthetics these days.
I hear you on the adhesive - some of those strips just don’t want to stay put, especially in kitchens where there’s steam and grease. But I’ve had pretty good luck using those tiny mounting clips that screw in, instead of relying on the sticky backing. It takes a few extra minutes, but they’re rock solid after that. For me, the under-cabinet lighting is worth the hassle because it makes late-night snack raids feel like a sci-fi movie... but yeah, if you want zero fuss, smart bulbs are hard to beat.
You know, I used to be all about the mounting clips too, but after patching a dozen tiny holes during a kitchen reno, I started rethinking my life choices. The resale crowd tends to notice stuff like that. Honestly, smart bulbs might not look as cool for under-cabinet, but at least they don’t leave you with Swiss cheese cabinets... especially if you change your mind as often as my tenants do.
I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve actually had more complaints from renters about smart bulbs than anything else - mainly connectivity issues or people accidentally resetting them. LED strips with adhesive backing can be a decent compromise. Less damage than clips, and you still get that clean look under cabinets. Plus, if you use the right adhesive, removal isn’t a nightmare. Just my two cents... sometimes the “techy” solution creates its own headaches.
