What would you do if your kid wandered into a half-demo’d kitchen?

- Totally get where you’re coming from - my toddler treats every “keep out” sign like a personal challenge.
- The painter’s tape game is genius. I tried something similar with masking tape and called it a “magic forcefield.” Worked for about ten minutes, but hey, small wins.
- Letting them “help” with demo is honestly not the worst idea. My little guy was obsessed with putting screws in a bucket. Kept him busy and out of trouble.
- You’re right, nothing’s ever fully kid-proof. Sometimes you just have to roll with it and keep the real hazards locked down.

Honestly, I get the appeal of letting kids “help” with demo, but I’ve seen that go sideways fast. One minute they’re dropping screws in a bucket, next thing you know they’re trying to pry up floorboards with a butter knife they swiped from the kitchen. I’m all for involving them, but sometimes a good old-fashioned baby gate and a pile of cardboard boxes in another room buys you more peace of mind. Not saying it’s foolproof, but it’s saved me a few headaches.

That’s exactly what happened to me last weekend. Thought my daughter was just stacking tiles, turned around and she’d managed to get a screwdriver into a wall outlet. Never again. Baby gate’s become my new best friend.

I can relate to the chaos - kids have a knack for finding the most dangerous thing in the room. I once caught my son trying to “paint” cabinet doors with grout. It’s wild how quickly things escalate. I do think baby gates are helpful, but I’ve also started using painter’s tape to mark off “no-go” zones. It’s not foolproof, but it gives a visual boundary that seems to help. Sometimes I wonder if we’re renovating or just setting up an obstacle course...

- Totally get the “obstacle course” vibe - my living room looked like a maze during our last reno.
- Tried painter’s tape too, but my daughter just peeled it up and wore it as a bracelet.
- Baby gates are great, but honestly, I just ended up stacking chairs in doorways half the time. Not pretty, but cheap.
- Anyone else feel like the more barriers you put up, the more determined they get?
