- Definitely relate to the “black hole” effect—my dining room eats light for breakfast.
- I’ve found that bouncing light off white poster board helps a bit, especially in rooms with dark wood paneling.
- Headlamps are great, but I keep a battery backup for my phone just in case I need extra light or to check wiring diagrams.
- If you’re dealing with plaster walls, sometimes the dust just seems to dull everything, no matter how bright your setup is.
- Not sure there’s a perfect answer, but layering different light sources seems to help more than relying on one big lamp.

Blackout mid-project is the worst. I remember rewiring a hallway and my only backup was a half-charged camping lantern—ended up using my tablet as a flashlight. Ever try those clamp lights with daylight bulbs? They’re not perfect, but they punch through some of that “black hole” vibe.

Man, I feel you on the blackout struggle. Been there in the middle of a kitchen demo—one second you’re cruising, next thing you’re fumbling for any light source that won’t fry your retinas. Those clamp lights with daylight bulbs do help, but I’ve found they can be a pain to angle just right. Still, better than working by phone flashlight and hoping you don’t step on a nail. At least you made it work with the tablet... that’s some quick thinking. Sometimes you just gotta improvise and laugh it off.

- Headlamp is my go-to—keeps both hands free and the beam follows wherever you look. Worth every penny.
- Clamp lights are decent, but yeah, getting the angle right is a pain. I’ve duct-taped them to broom handles before just to get light where I need it.
- If you’re mid-demo and the power’s out, I’d pause anything with sharp tools. Not worth the risk, even if you think you’ve got enough light.
- For backup, I keep a couple of those rechargeable work lights in the truck. They’re rugged and you can stand them up anywhere.

Honestly, working by phone flashlight is just asking for a stubbed toe or worse. Been there, done that, learned my lesson.

- Couldn’t agree more on the headlamp. It’s a game changer, especially when you’re crawling under sinks or in attics.
- Those clamp lights are a pain, but I’ve used zip ties to rig them up when duct tape runs out—works in a pinch.
- I’ll admit, I’ve pushed through with hand tools during an outage, but you’re right, it’s not worth the risk. One slip and you’re regretting it.
- Rechargeable lanterns are underrated. Hang one from a ceiling hook and you’ve got decent ambient light, not just a spotlight.

Sometimes you just gotta get creative... but yeah, safety first.
