Some brands definitely leave a greasy mark, especially on older paint jobs. I’ve noticed it’s worse if the paint’s oil-based or hasn’t fully cured. Sometimes a little rubbing alcohol helps, but not always. Honestly, I stick to mechanical fasteners for anything heavy and only use putty for lightweight stuff or collectibles. 3M strips are a gamble on textured walls, honestly. I tried them in my last place (orange peel texture) and half the time they’d just peel off after a few weeks, especially if it got humid. When they did stick, taking them off sometimes ripped little bits of paint anyway. Nails leave a tiny hole but at least you know what you’re dealing with - patch, sand, done. If you’re set on avoiding holes, I’ve heard some folks swear by museum putty for lighter stuff, but I’m still skeptical after my greasy putty fiasco...

I hear you on the 3M strips - tried hanging a framed map in one of my rentals with those, and it lasted about a week before gravity won. The orange peel texture is a menace. I’ve patched more holes than I care to admit, but at least with nails, you know what you’re getting into. Museum putty, though...
