Totally get where you’re coming from. My place is a 1950s special and every time I open up a wall, it’s like a weird history lesson—sometimes cool, sometimes terrifying. You nailed it with the “assume nothing is up to code” rule. DIY saves cash, but man, some stuff just needs a pro. Right? I always say, if your floors don’t creak, are you even living in an old house? But yeah, “assume nothing is up to code” should be stitched on a pillow for anyone doing renos. Step one: expect the unexpected. Step two: double your timeline (and maybe your budget).

When it comes to earthquake-proofing, I’ve seen folks try to DIY everything—sometimes with... let’s call it “creative” results. My personal rule: if it involves structural integrity or anything that could literally bring the house down, that’s when I call in the pros. I once tried to reinforce a wall myself and ended up with more holes than drywall.

That line about “assume nothing is up to code” is way too real, especially when you’re dealing with anything built before the 70s. You start peeling back layers and it’s like an archeological dig—knob-and-tube wiring, random pipes that go nowhere, and those mysterious “support” beams that are basically just decorative at this point. There’s a certain charm to it until you realize every project is two steps forward, one step sideways.

I’m with you on calling in the pros for anything structural. There’s a world of difference between patching drywall or swapping out trim and actually tying walls to foundations or retrofitting cripple walls. I’ve seen folks try to use hurricane ties and a prayer—no thanks. If you don’t know your way around a Simpson bracket or a rotary hammer, probably best to leave the seismic upgrades to someone who does.

That being said, there’s still plenty you can do yourself if you’re careful—blocking between joists, securing water heaters, even adding some basic shear panels if you’ve done your homework. But yeah... once you’re talking load paths or foundation bolts, I’d rather swallow my pride and get it inspected than roll the dice.

Funny thing about old houses—you fix one thing and suddenly three more pop up. Last time I tried to level a floor, I ended up discovering an entire colony of carpenter ants living in what used to be a sill plate. Good times.

But when it all comes together? There’s nothing like seeing doors swing true and floors that don’t feel like a trampoline. Makes all those late-night YouTube rabbit holes on “how not to mess up shiplap” kind of worth it... at least until the next project rears its head.

I get where you’re coming from, but honestly, I think a lot of folks sell themselves short when it comes to seismic upgrades. Not saying everyone should be drilling into their foundation on day one, but with the right research and some patience, stuff like bolting sill plates or adding plywood shear panels isn’t rocket science. The trick is following the details—don’t just slap on hardware and hope for the best.

I’ve seen plenty of DIY jobs that hold up just fine, especially when people actually read the manufacturer’s instructions (which, yeah, is rare). The bigger issue is when people skip steps or use the wrong fasteners—like thinking deck screws are a substitute for structural bolts. That’s where things go sideways.

And about those “decorative” support beams... sometimes they’re hiding more than you think. Had a job last year where what looked like a useless post was actually carrying half the load from an upstairs addition. Good thing we checked before pulling it.

Bottom line: don’t be afraid to tackle some of this stuff yourself, just know your limits and double-check before you start cutting or drilling.
