A narrow entry landing makes door swing matter

Inswing doors may seem easier to protect from weather, while an outswing door can free up interior space. But how much should porch exposure and landing layout drive the choice?

As a hypothetical, a narrow landing with nearby steps could make an outswing door awkward, while furniture just inside might complicate an inswing. Does a covered porch change how you’d weigh weather exposure, and what local code or door-manufacturer requirements are worth verifying before settling on a swing direction?

With a narrow landing, I’d judge the outswing with the door fully open: does the leaf leave enough room for someone to stand and pass toward the steps without being trapped or blocking the route? If not, an inswing may work better, as long as it clears furniture and doesn’t create a pinch point inside.
