- Totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve had to retrofit a 1920s door and honestly, most overrides look like afterthoughts.
- A few things I’ve noticed:
- Some European brands do a better job with minimal key slots, but they’re pricey and not always compatible with older doors.
- I tried hiding the override behind a decorative escutcheon—works okay, but not invisible.
- Function tends to win out for me, especially in winter. Batteries just don’t cut it at -20°C.
- If anyone’s found something that actually blends in with period details, I’d love to hear about it... most of the stuff out there still feels pretty “techy” for my taste.
