I hear you on the lockbox thing—those things stick out like a sore thumb. I tried to paint mine to match the siding, but it still looked like I was hiding the crown jewels out there. The fake rock trick is classic, but I swear every delivery driver in my neighborhood knows to check those now.

I’ve actually started using old hardware—like a rusty hose nozzle or a broken solar light—as decoys. Nobody wants to poke around in a spider-infested garden tool, right? But yeah, the real challenge is remembering which “brilliant” hiding spot I used this time. I once spent a good twenty minutes poking around the compost bin before realizing I’d put the key in an empty birdseed bag in the shed. Not my proudest moment.

I’m with you on smart locks being a mixed bag. The eco-friendly side of me loves fewer keys floating around, but when the battery dies at 11pm, it’s not exactly sustainable for my sanity. Maybe the best solution is just to keep a spare with someone you trust and hope they’re not too curious about your snack stash.

Trying to hide a key without making it obvious is basically an art form at this point. I totally get the struggle with lockboxes—they never blend in, no matter how much you try. The decoy trick with old hardware is actually pretty clever, though I’d probably forget where I put the real key too. Ever thought about a small wall-mounted box disguised as something else, like a fake utility meter? Not perfect, but at least it doesn’t scream “spare key here.” And yeah, smart locks are great until they’re not... why do the batteries always die at the worst possible time?

- Totally get where you’re coming from—finding a spot for a spare key that doesn’t look obvious is a real challenge.
- I’ve tried those fake rocks and honestly, they just look like weird lumps in the yard.
- The fake utility meter idea is actually pretty smart, though I’d probably forget which one was the decoy after a while.
- Smart locks are cool until you’re standing outside with groceries and the battery’s dead... been there, not fun.
- At least you’re thinking outside the box—sometimes that’s half the battle.

Been there too—except I was holding a bag of compost and a toddler. Not my finest hour. Ever tried hiding a key in a birdhouse? Squirrels found mine before I did. Maybe the real trick is just befriending your neighbor with the spare?

I’ve had my own run-in with the “locked out with arms full” scenario, though in my case it was a freshly painted cabinet door, a bag of mulch, and a phone with 2% battery. The irony of installing a smart lock for “convenience” while standing on my porch, covered in sawdust, wasn’t lost on me. I remember thinking, “At least the door looks nice from out here.”

The birdhouse trick—tried that too. Only I went with a faux rock, which turned out to be more of a slug hotel than an actual hiding spot. I don’t know who was more startled when I reached for the key: me or the wildlife squatter.

I get the appeal of handing a spare to the neighbor, but in my case, their idea of a quick handoff involves a ten-minute chat about compost tea and whether my solar panels are attracting more birds. Sometimes I think it’d be faster to just break in through the bathroom window.

All that said, I still like smart locks, but now I treat their batteries like smoke detectors—scheduled reminders to swap them out before they die. And I keep a spare key in my toolbox, which is probably the last place anyone (besides me) would look. Not foolproof, but at least it’s squirrel-resistant.

If anyone’s found a truly foolproof backup plan that doesn’t involve befriending local rodents or scaling fences, I’m all ears...
