Belt-driven openers are definitely the way to go—switched mine out last year and haven't looked back. As for marigolds, tried them once but rabbits still feasted...maybe my local bunnies just have weird taste?
"As for marigolds, tried them once but rabbits still feasted...maybe my local bunnies just have weird taste?"
Haha, sounds like your rabbits have gourmet palates! I've heard mixed things about marigolds too—some swear by them, others say they're useless. Makes me wonder if it's more about rabbit personality than plant choice. Have you tried other deterrents like garlic or cayenne pepper sprays? Curious if anyone's had better luck with those...
I've tried cayenne pepper spray before, and honestly, it was hit or miss. Worked great for a week or two, then the rabbits seemed to get used to it—or maybe rain washed it away too quickly. Garlic didn't do much either, except make my yard smell like an Italian restaurant. Wonder if anyone's had luck with motion-activated sprinklers? Seems like a decent idea, but I'm not sure if it's worth the hassle of setting up...
I've seen a couple clients try motion sprinklers—honestly, mixed results. They're pretty funny to watch at first, but rabbits can be surprisingly stubborn. Maybe worth trying one sprinkler first before investing too much? Or have you thought about planting stuff rabbits don't like...?
"Maybe worth trying one sprinkler first before investing too much?"
Haha, yeah, rabbits are way more determined than you'd expect. Tried motion sprinklers myself once—worked great for about a week, then the rabbits were back like nothing happened. Ended up planting marigolds around my veggies instead...seems to help a bit. Curious though, has anyone tried ultrasonic repellents? Not sure if that's just marketing hype or if it actually does anything useful.
