"Lithium grease was decent but got annoyingly gummy when temps dipped below freezing"

Interesting, I've had mixed experiences with PTFE sprays myself. They're great initially, but in my experience, they don't seem to hold up as long as a good silicone-based lubricant, especially under constant use. Silicone spray tends to resist dirt and grime better too, which is a big plus if you're in a dusty area. Might be worth giving it a shot next winter...could save you from reapplying as often.

I've actually had decent luck with silicone sprays too, especially when it comes to avoiding that gummy buildup in colder weather. PTFE sprays always seemed promising at first, but I noticed they just don't hold up as long under heavy use—especially if your garage sees a lot of action like mine does (kids constantly opening and closing it for bikes and skateboards, anyone?).

One thing about silicone spray though: I've found it can sometimes attract dust if you go overboard spraying it on thick. Learned that the hard way after turning my opener into a dirt magnet last summer... lesson learned—light coats are key. I've also heard good things about graphite-based lubes for extreme cold, but haven't personally given them a try yet. Maybe next winter I'll experiment a bit more; anything to keep the neighbors happy and my sanity intact when I'm sneaking out early mornings.

Tried graphite myself last winter—honestly, it was pretty solid. A bit messy applying it the first time... but no dust buildup and held up great through freezing temps. Worth a shot if silicone ever lets you down.

Graphite definitely works well—used it on an old garage door track a few winters back. Like you said, bit messy at first, but once it's set, it's golden. Just don't wear your favorite shirt when applying... learned that the hard way.

Good tip about the shirt... graphite stains are no joke, haha. I've had better luck lately with silicone spray—less messy, dries clear, and seems quieter overall. But graphite does hold up great in winter weather. Has anyone tried both and noticed if one lasts significantly longer than the other? Curious if climate makes a big difference too...
