Finally found a quiet garage opener that won't wake the neighbors

It's surprising how much noise sneaks through worn-out weather stripping.

I get what you're saying about the seals, but honestly, how much difference can weather stripping really make? I've always assumed the motor vibrations were the main culprit... now you've got me wondering if I've overlooked something simple all these years. Might have to test this myself.

You'd be surprised how much those little strips do. I used to think the same thing—figured my ancient garage door opener was just naturally noisy. Then one weekend, after my wife nagged me enough, I replaced the weather stripping (mostly to prove her wrong, honestly). Turns out, she was right... again. The difference was pretty noticeable. Still not whisper quiet, but definitely less rattling and clanking. Worth a shot before dropping cash on a fancy new opener.

Funny you mention weather stripping—I had a similar experience, but mine was with lubrication. My opener sounded like a freight train pulling into the station every time I came home late. I figured it was just old age and inevitable wear, but one afternoon I decided to spray some lithium grease on the tracks and hinges, mostly out of boredom. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much, but the difference was pretty surprising. It didn't turn whisper quiet or anything, but the screeching and grinding dropped significantly.

Still, after a while, I ended up upgrading to a belt-driven opener. Night and day difference compared to my old chain-driven beast. If you're still not satisfied after weather stripping and lubrication, I'd definitely recommend looking into belt drives—they're pricier but worth it if noise is a big concern.

I've been thinking about switching to a belt-driven opener myself, but the price has me hesitating a bit. Good to hear it's actually worth it though. Right now, I've got an older chain-drive that's pretty noisy, even after greasing it up. It's better than before, but still not great—especially when I'm coming home late from work and trying not to wake everyone up.

Did you notice any difference in reliability or maintenance needs after switching to the belt drive? My main worry is spending more upfront and then having unexpected issues down the line...

I switched from a chain-drive to a belt-drive opener about two years ago, and honestly, reliability-wise, it's been pretty solid. I was hesitant too because of the upfront cost, but maintenance has actually been easier—no more regular greasing or adjusting chain tension. The only thing I've noticed is that the belt can stretch slightly over time, but that's a simple adjustment every year or so. Overall, I'd say the quieter operation and less frequent upkeep have justified the extra expense for me.
