"Had one who was dead-set on hardwood flooring for a basement renovation, despite moisture concerns."
Yeah, moisture and hardwood definitely don't mix well... I've had similar struggles convincing folks about acoustic insulation for shared walls. Had a client once who insisted regular drywall was enough between their home theater and bedroomβuntil they actually heard the difference with proper soundproofing installed. Ever had someone change their mind only after experiencing the results firsthand?
Had a similar experience with paint colorsβclient was convinced dark walls would shrink the room. Once we actually painted a test wall, they saw how cozy and inviting it felt... sometimes seeing (or hearing!) really is believing.
Interesting point about needing to see or hear something firsthand, but I'm wondering if that's always practical? Like with your garage openerβsure, quiet is great, but aren't those usually pricier? I've been down this road before, and sometimes the quietest models come with a hefty price tag. I ended up going mid-range, and honestly, it's quiet enough that my neighbors haven't complained yet. Maybe it's not whisper-quiet, but it does the job without breaking the bank.
Same with paint colorsβtesting a wall is easy enough, but what about bigger investments like flooring or appliances? Can't exactly install a test fridge or redo half your floor just to see how it feels, right? Curious how others handle situations where "try before you buy" isn't really an option...
"Can't exactly install a test fridge or redo half your floor just to see how it feels, right?"
Haha, true... but have you tried visiting open houses or showrooms? I've found seeing flooring or appliances in real-life settings helps a ton. Not perfect, but beats guessing from online pics.
I actually did something similar when hunting for a quiet garage opener. Went to a friend's place who installed one recently, stood inside while he opened and closed it a few times... sounds weird, but really helped me decide.
