There’s something to be said for mechanical reliability—no batteries to die, no apps to crash.

That hits home for me. I’ve had a regular deadbolt for years and never once worried about it failing because of a dead battery or some random software update. I get the convenience factor with smart locks, but honestly, the peace of mind with old-school hardware is hard to beat. If you’re happy with what you’ve got, there’s no shame in sticking with it. Sometimes simple just works.

I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve actually had my old deadbolt freeze up on me one winter—literally couldn’t get the key in. Ended up having to call a locksmith anyway. Sometimes the “simple” stuff has its own quirks, especially in an old house like mine. Not saying smart locks are perfect, but mechanical isn’t always foolproof either.

Had the same thing happen with my back door a couple years ago. The lock just wouldn’t budge after a snowstorm, and I was standing there with groceries freezing my hands off. Ended up using a hairdryer extension cord from the garage to thaw it out—looked ridiculous, but it worked. I get the appeal of smart locks, but I still kinda trust the old-school stuff more, even with its quirks. At least you can usually see what’s wrong with it, you know?

Totally get where you’re coming from. Mechanical locks are usually easy to troubleshoot—just like your hairdryer trick. With smart locks, if the battery dies or the tech glitches, you’re stuck waiting for support. I’ve seen both fail, but at least with the old ones, a little creativity usually gets you back inside.

Had a smart lock freeze up on me during a rainstorm once. Ended up sitting on my porch with a soggy pizza and zero dignity. At least with my old deadbolt, I could MacGyver my way in with a credit card...
