Plant-based lubricants are underrated for sure. I've used them on door hinges and window tracks during remodels—works like a charm, and clients appreciate the eco-friendly angle. Just a heads-up though, some plant-based lubes can gum up a bit over time if dust settles in, so wiping off excess after application helps. Learned that the hard way when a sliding door got stubborn again after a few months... nothing dramatic, but still annoying enough to remember!

Totally agree on the dust issue—learned that lesson myself after a client called me back because their "eco-friendly" sliding pantry door turned into a mini workout session every time they wanted a snack. Turns out, I was a bit too generous with the plant-based lube, and it became a dust magnet. Now I always wipe down after applying.

Another thing I've noticed is that some plant-based lubricants have a distinct smell—nothing terrible, but definitely noticeable in smaller spaces. Had one client jokingly ask if I'd hidden a salad somewhere in their kitchen after lubing up their cabinet hinges. 😂

Have you found certain brands or types that don't have as strong an odor? Curious if anyone else has run into the "salad dressing" effect...

I've actually found the smell thing to be pretty minor, honestly. Maybe it's just me, but clients rarely notice unless they're really sensitive or the space is tiny. The bigger issue I've run into is durability—some plant-based lubes seem to dry out quicker, meaning more frequent reapplication. I'd rather deal with a faint salad scent than having to revisit a squeaky hinge every few months...

Interesting point about durability—I’ve noticed the same thing with plant-based lubes drying out faster. It can definitely get tedious having to reapply frequently, especially on doors that see heavy use. Have you experimented with mixing plant-based lubes with other lubricants to balance durability and eco-friendliness? I’m curious if anyone’s found a good hybrid solution that offers the best of both worlds...

Funny you mention that—I actually tried mixing a plant-based lube with a silicone spray once, hoping to get the best of both worlds. It worked okay at first, but after a few weeks, it got kind of gummy and attracted dust like crazy. Ended up having to clean the hinges completely and start over. Maybe I got the proportions wrong or something... Has anyone else had better luck with a different combo?
