- Had a client with a 1920s door that warped every spring—smart lock installation was a nightmare.
- Ended up going back to a classic deadbolt, just because the tech kept jamming when the door shifted.
- Honestly, I love smart home stuff, but if your door’s got “personality,” old-school locks are just less hassle.
- That said, if you’re handy and like tinkering, you can sometimes shim or adjust the strike plate to help... but it’s never perfect.
- Personally, I’d rather deal with a sticky key than an app that won’t connect when I’m locked out.

I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve had some luck with smart locks on older doors if you’re willing to go the extra mile. Sometimes, planing the edge of the door just a hair and rehanging it can make a world of difference. Not saying it’s a five-minute fix, but if you’re set on keeping the tech, it’s doable. Still, nothing beats the reliability of a solid deadbolt when things get weird with humidity.

I hear you on the deadbolt—humidity is a real pain, especially in older houses. But I keep circling back to reliability vs. convenience. Have you ever had tenants struggle with smart locks during power outages or Wi-Fi drops? I’ve had a couple of cases where the tech just failed at the worst possible time, and it turned into a headache. Curious how you balance that risk with the appeal of remote access. Ever tried a hybrid setup—old-school deadbolt plus a keypad or something?

Locked Out Drama—What Would You Do?

Humidity is the arch-nemesis of my front door, I swear. Had a smart lock once—looked cool, until the Wi-Fi fizzled and I was standing outside in my slippers, waving my phone like a lunatic. Now I just use a basic keypad deadbolt with a hidden spare key as backup. Tech’s great... until it’s not. Sometimes low-tech wins.

- I ditched smart locks after one too many “locked out with groceries” moments.
- Now it’s a sturdy deadbolt, spare key in a combo lockbox, and that’s it.
- Ever thought about an old-school latch or even a storm door as backup?
- Curious if anyone’s tried those fingerprint locks—do they hold up in bad weather?
