Locked Out Drama—What Would You Do?

I hear you on the old-school deadbolts. There’s just something about that solid “clunk” when you lock up—feels like peace of mind. I’ve worked with a few clients who insisted on keeping their vintage locks, even when we updated everything else. Honestly, I get it. Smart locks look cool, but I’ve seen them glitch at the worst times. One project, the homeowner’s phone died right as she was trying to get in with groceries and a toddler in tow... not exactly a selling point for high-tech.

That said, I do like the convenience of keypads for certain spaces—like rental units or mudrooms. But for main entry doors, especially on older homes, I lean classic. Maybe it’s nostalgia, or maybe it’s just not wanting to rely on WiFi to get inside after a long day. Sometimes “stubborn” is just code for “learned from experience,” right?

Totally get what you mean about that “clunk”—it’s weirdly reassuring, right? I’m in the middle of my first reno and keep going back and forth on this. Part of me loves the idea of a keypad (no more digging for keys at the bottom of my bag), but then I picture myself standing outside in the rain when the batteries die. Has anyone tried hiding a spare key in one of those fake rocks? I always wonder if that’s just asking for trouble or actually genius...

- Keypad sounds great until you realize your phone’s dead, it’s raining, and you’re doing the “please work” dance on the porch.
- Fake rocks? Tried it. My dog found it before I did. Also, every delivery guy seems to know the trick...
- I just gave a spare to my neighbor. Not sure if that’s safer, but at least she bakes cookies.
- Honestly, I still keep a key in my wallet. Paranoid? Maybe. But at least I’m dry.

That’s honestly the dream scenario—if you trust your neighbor and get cookies out of it, is there really a downside? I’ve always wondered, though: what about those little combo lockboxes realtors use? They’re not exactly pretty, but they seem practical and you don’t need your phone or a fake rock. Has anyone tried hiding one in a planter or something less obvious? Or maybe there’s a way to make them blend in with the garden? Just thinking out loud...

I’ve actually seen folks get pretty creative with those realtor lockboxes. One client of mine painted theirs to match the trim on their porch, then tucked it behind a big pot of lavender—honestly, you’d never notice it unless you were looking for it. I get the concern about them being an eyesore, but with a little DIY spirit, they can blend in way better than those fake rocks (which, let’s be real, fool no one). And hey, if your neighbor bakes cookies, that’s a security upgrade in my book...
