I’ve wrestled with this on a few projects—those old mortise locks are like little puzzles, and I totally get the fear of damaging something irreplaceable. I’ve seen a client use a combo of a lockbox and a keypad on the garden gate, which worked out pretty well. The retrofit smart locks always seem a bit clunky on antique doors, and honestly, the aesthetics just never feel right. Sometimes, a clever workaround is the most respectful choice for the house’s character.
