Locked Out Drama—What Would You Do?

I’ve seen keys stashed in BBQ grills before—let’s just say, unless you love surprise spider encounters, it’s not ideal. One client hid their lockbox inside a fake rock by the AC unit, but the “rock” was about as subtle as a disco ball. I usually bolt mine under the deck stairs. Out of sight, but not so hidden I’m crawling through cobwebs every time I forget my keys... which is more often than I’d like to admit.

- Been there, done that—locked myself out more times than I care to admit.
- Hiding keys in BBQs or fake rocks just screams “rob me” in my neighborhood.
- I’ve got an old milk box by the porch (leftover from when folks actually had milk delivered). Tucked a spare key inside, under some gardening gloves. Not exactly high-tech, but nobody’s ever found it but me... and maybe a squirrel once.
- Honestly, I’d rather risk a little dirt than deal with another locksmith bill.

I get that—those fake rocks are basically an open invitation. When I renovated, I actually installed a combo lockbox behind a loose fence board. Not invisible, but at least it’s not the first place someone would look. It’s saved me twice already... and no squirrels yet.

Honestly, I’ve seen those lockboxes get pried open pretty quick if someone’s determined. I just hand a spare to a neighbor I trust—less hardware to mess with, and nobody’s poking around my fence. Not perfect, but it’s worked for me so far.

Yeah, I hear you on the lockboxes. I’ve seen folks just smash them with a hammer or wrench—doesn’t take much if someone’s really after it. Hiding it behind a fence board helps, but nothing’s foolproof. I’ve actually stashed a key in a fake sprinkler head before. Not high security, but it blends in and nobody’s ever found it. Neighbor’s a good backup, though, as long as they’re around when you need ‘em.
