Curious—has anyone tried those smart locks that use fingerprints? I’m tempted, but not sure if they’re worth the cost or just another thing to break down...

Tried the fingerprint smart lock on one of my rentals last year. It was slick—until winter hit and the thing decided my thumbprint wasn’t “recognizable” with cold fingers. Ended up doing an awkward dance on the porch while my tenants watched from inside. Honestly, I trust a good old keypad more. Less drama, fewer tech headaches, and no need to moisturize before unlocking your door...

- Had a similar issue with a biometric lock on my 1920s place—cold weather plus old wiring made it pretty unreliable.
- Keypads seem more forgiving, especially if you’ve got guests or trades coming and going.
- Anyone here tried those combo locks that also have a physical key backup? Wondering if that’s the sweet spot for reliability...

Honestly, I think you’re onto something with the combo + key backup. I’ve specified those for a few clients—especially in older homes where wiring can be a bit... unpredictable. The keypad is great for guests (no more hiding keys under flowerpots), but having that old-school key as a fallback is a lifesaver when batteries die or tech gets fussy. Just make sure the keyhole isn’t in some awkward spot—seen a few where you need yoga skills to reach it!

Honestly, I love the combo + key backup idea—best of both worlds, right? I just wish more of them were made from recycled materials. Also, why are those backup keyholes always hidden behind some weird little flap? Makes me feel like a safecracker every time.

I get the appeal of combo plus key backup, but honestly, I’d rather just have a solid mechanical deadbolt. Less to break, less to hide, and way cheaper. Those hidden keyholes are a pain—last time I tried to use one, I dropped the flap and it disappeared under my porch steps. Maybe I’m just old school, but sometimes simple is better... especially when you’re on a budget.
