I've never tried linseed oil myself, but now you've got me curious. Usually, I just sand it down and prime, but sometimes the primer still goes on patchy. Maybe that's why? I did once try a wood conditioner before staining some old trim—worked wonders for evenness, but drying took forever. Is linseed oil similar in drying time, or does it set up quicker? Might have to experiment on a small spot first...
