Lighting up the backyard fence: solar, wired, or something else?
Honestly, I kind of love the quirky side of the smart lights - even if they’re not perfect. We’ve got a rambling old fence out back, and those color-changing bulbs ended up being a hit at our last neighborhood potluck. Sure, the app crashed a couple times, but the kids thought it was hilarious when half the fence went disco and the other half just glowed blue. Maybe it’s the old house charm, but a little unpredictability feels right at home for us. For everyday, though, I agree - nothing beats those classic solar stakes for pure reliability.
That unpredictability really does add some character, doesn’t it? I’ve run into similar hiccups with smart bulbs - sometimes they’re more entertaining than functional, but that’s half the fun at gatherings. Still, I get what you mean about solar stakes. They’re not flashy, but they just work, rain or shine. There’s something to be said for mixing a bit of tech whimsy with tried-and-true basics... keeps things interesting without losing reliability.
Mixing tech with basics definitely keeps things interesting, but I always wonder about long-term value. I’ve seen properties where the “fun” lighting ends up being a maintenance headache, especially when it’s time to sell. Solar stakes are reliable, but do they really add enough curb appeal? Or is it better to invest in hardwired options that might cost more upfront but pay off in the long run? Curious if anyone’s actually seen a difference in resale value based on backyard lighting choices...
I’ve actually swapped out solar stakes for hardwired lights over the years. At first, I liked how easy solar was - just stick them in and you’re done. But after a couple seasons, some stopped working or looked faded, and replacing them got old fast. Hardwired took more effort (and cash) upfront, but they’ve held up way better and honestly look more polished. When we had our place appraised last year, the backyard lighting was mentioned as a plus, but I doubt it made a huge difference in value - maybe just helped the place show better. If you’re planning to stay put for a while, I’d lean hardwired, but if you’re flipping or on a tight budget, solar’s not terrible either... just don’t expect miracles.
Couldn’t agree more about solar being a bit of a letdown over time. I fell for the “no wires, no hassle” thing too, but after a couple rainy winters, half of them were toast. Hardwired definitely takes more elbow grease, but once it’s done, it’s just… solid. Plus, the light is way more reliable and you can actually see where you’re walking. I think you nailed it - if you’re in it for the long haul, hardwired is worth every penny. Solar’s fine for quick fixes or rentals, but if you want that wow factor at night, wired wins hands down.
