Plug-in string lights are what I keep coming back to too. Solar’s tempting, but I’ve had the same issue—either they’re too dim or they just don’t last. I don’t mind running an extension cord if it means I can actually see what I’m doing out there. I did try those battery-powered ones once, but swapping out batteries every week got old fast. For the price and brightness, plug-in wins, even if it means dodging a cord or two.

Totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve wrestled with the same choices, and honestly, plug-in string lights just deliver every time. Like you said:

- Extension cords can be a pain, but I’ll take that over dim solar any day.
- Tried solar a couple summers back—looked great for about a week, then faded fast. Not worth the hassle.
- Battery-powered ones? Yeah, swapping batteries is a chore. I ended up with a box of half-dead AAs and still no light.

One thing that helped me: I ran the cord along the fence top and used those little cable clips to keep it tidy. Not perfect, but at least nobody’s tripping over wires.

Honestly, sometimes low-tech is just more reliable. If it works and you can see your grill at night, that’s a win in my book.

I hear you on the solar lights. I got sucked in by the promise of “no wires, no hassle” and ended up with a row of sad, barely-glowing bulbs after a month. Maybe if you live somewhere that gets sun all day, every day, but around here? Not so much. I even tried moving the panels around to chase the sun—felt like I was babysitting my fence.

Plug-in string lights just work. I’ve had the same set for three years now, and they’re still going strong. The only real headache was figuring out how to keep the cords out of the way. Ended up stapling them along the inside edge of the fence and running an outdoor-rated extension cord from the porch outlet. Not exactly invisible, but nobody’s tripped yet.

One thing I did differently: I put one of those outdoor smart plugs on the outlet. Now I can turn everything on or off with my phone or set a timer. It’s not fancy, but it beats fumbling around in the dark for a switch.

Battery-powered lights were a total bust for me too. Half the time they’d be dead when I actually wanted to use them, and buying batteries adds up fast. Plus, it’s just more stuff to keep track of.

If you’re worried about weatherproofing, I wrapped any exposed connections with electrical tape and used those little plastic covers you can get at hardware stores. Haven’t had any issues with rain or snow so far.

At this point, I’m convinced simple is better—just give me something that turns on when I need it and doesn’t need constant babysitting. If that means dealing with a few cords, so be it.
