Yeah, I hear you. Drawing that line is tough at first, but it really does save your sanity in the long run. I used to bend over backwards for “just one more thing” and it always came back to bite me. Now, if it’s not on the signed scope, it waits until we’re square. It feels weird at first, but man, it’s a lot less stressful than chasing folks down for payment or arguing about what was promised. You’re not alone—most of us had to learn this the hard way.

Man, delayed payments are the worst. I used to think being flexible would make clients happier, but honestly, it just made my life harder. Here’s what’s helped me keep things on track (and my stress level down):

1. Before starting, I always walk through the scope with the client—like, literally line by line. If they want to add something later, I jot it down and send a quick change order for them to sign before touching it.
2. For payment, I break the project into clear milestones. No moving forward until that milestone’s paid up. It feels awkward at first, but most folks respect it once you set the expectation.
3. I started using a simple contract template that spells out payment terms and late fees. It’s not fancy, but it’s saved me from so many headaches.
4. If someone’s dragging their feet, I’ll pause work and just say, “Hey, as soon as we’re square, I’ll jump right back in.” Nine times out of ten, they pay up pretty quick.

It took a few rough lessons to get here, but now I can actually focus on the creative side instead of chasing checks. Not perfect, but way better than before...
