Delayed payments driving me nuts—does this ever get easier?

Paperwork beats headaches every time.

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve had folks balk at signing a simple contract—always makes me wonder what they’re hiding. Last year, I started using milestone payments through escrow for bigger jobs. It’s not perfect, but it’s saved me from chasing after money or unfinished work. Honestly, the ones who push back hardest are usually the ones you’d end up regretting anyway.

That’s been my experience too. If someone gets weird about a contract, it’s a red flag. I’d rather lose a job than lose sleep over chasing payments. Paper trails save sanity, trust me.

I get what you’re saying, but sometimes I wonder if we’re too quick to judge based on contract hesitancy. I’ve had a couple clients who were just inexperienced, not shady—though, yeah, the ones who argue every clause usually end up being a nightmare. Do you ever try to educate clients about why contracts matter, or do you just walk away if they push back?

You nailed it there. I’ve found that some folks just need a little hand-holding through the contract part, especially if they’re new to hiring out work. I try to walk them through why each section matters—sometimes it helps, sometimes not so much. Still, if someone flat-out refuses to sign or nitpicks every single line... that’s when I start getting nervous. But yeah, it’s tough to balance patience with protecting yourself.

Totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve had people who just needed a bit of guidance, but there’s a big difference between someone asking questions and someone who wants to rewrite the whole contract. That’s usually a red flag for me. I’ve learned the hard way that if they’re nitpicking now, they’ll probably be just as difficult when it comes time to pay up. Sometimes I wonder if being too patient actually backfires... you try to be understanding, but end up getting burned.
