Delayed payments driving me nuts—does this ever get easier?

Delayed Payments Are the Worst, But Surprises Behind Walls Are Close

That “just open it up” approach is a double-edged sword. I’ve had projects where leaving a wall untouched meant missing old wiring or a slow leak—both cost more to fix later. But yeah, sometimes you open it and wish you never had. Payment delays are brutal. Even with solid contracts, enforcement can be tricky and legal recourse is rarely quick. I’ve started building in bigger contingencies and milestone payments, but nothing’s foolproof. It’s all risk management at the end of the day... just wish it felt less like gambling sometimes.

Man, you nailed it. Every time I open up a wall, I brace myself like I’m on a game show—“What’s Behind Door Number Two?” Spoiler: it’s never a vacation. And delayed payments? Had one client who treated the payment schedule like a choose-your-own-adventure book. I’ve tried milestone payments too, but there’s always that one curveball. Honestly, sometimes I think flipping coins would be less stressful.

That’s honestly the most accurate way to put it. I swear, every time I think I’ve seen it all, there’s a new surprise—like the time I found a squirrel’s stash of acorns in the ductwork. As for payments, yeah, milestone agreements sound good on paper but somehow there’s always a “reason” for a delay. I get what you mean about it feeling like gambling. Sometimes I wonder if there’s any way to make it less of a roll of the dice, but then again, maybe that unpredictability is just baked into this line of work.

It does get a bit easier to roll with the punches after a while, or at least you get better at spotting red flags early. Still, there are days where I question why I didn’t just pick up stamp collecting or something. Hang in there—at least we’ve got stories to tell, right?

You nailed it with the “game show” comparison. Last year, I opened up a bathroom wall and found a bird’s nest wedged between the studs—feathers, twigs, the works. As for payments, here’s what’s helped me: I started keeping a super simple spreadsheet and jotting down every promise and actual payment date. It’s not perfect, but at least I can nudge folks with specifics when things get weirdly delayed. Still, sometimes it feels like you need a minor in negotiation just to get paid on time. At least those stories make for good laughs later... usually.

That bird’s nest story is wild—never thought I’d hear about wildlife in a bathroom wall. I totally get what you mean about tracking payments. Does it ever feel like you’re spending more time chasing money than actually working? I’m still figuring out if there’s a trick to it or if it’s just part of the ride. At least you’ve got a system down, even if it’s not perfect.
