I actually like that it fades a bit over time instead of chipping off in big flakes.

That’s exactly why I went with limewash too. Paint just never holds up on brick, and I got tired of patching spots every year. Limewash is way more forgiving, and honestly, the cost is lower if you’re willing to mix your own. Only thing I’d push back on is the prep—if your brick’s been sealed, getting it ready can be a pain. But for me, the savings and low maintenance are worth it.

I get the appeal of limewash, especially with how it ages, but I actually went the other way and stuck with paint. Maybe I’m just stubborn, but I like the crisp look, even if it means touching up every now and then. The prep for limewash on sealed brick was a dealbreaker for me—scraping off old sealant was a nightmare. I guess it comes down to whether you want that lived-in vibe or something more polished. Both have their headaches, honestly.

Totally get what you mean about the prep for limewash—scraping off old sealant is a pain, and I swear I still find little flakes months later. I actually went for limewash on my 1920s fireplace because I wanted that softer, aged look, but it was a bit of a saga getting there. The first coat looked patchy and I panicked, but after a couple more passes it mellowed out and now I kind of love how it changes with the light.

That said, paint does have its perks. My neighbor painted hers a deep navy and it looks so sharp—definitely more “finished” than mine. But yeah, touch-ups are inevitable either way. Sometimes I wonder if I should’ve just left the original brick alone, but then again, it’s fun to switch things up every few decades, right?

I’ve redone a few fireplaces and honestly, I always end up second-guessing the first week. Painted brick is easier to clean, but yeah, it can look a bit too “done” for my taste. Limewash was messy but worth it—just takes patience. If you’re not sure, I say live with it for a while... you might surprise yourself.

I’m right in the middle of my first fireplace redo—went with paint because I thought it’d be a breeze. Turns out, I spent three days debating if I’d just ruined the whole room. My sister says it looks “magazine ready,” but honestly, sometimes I miss the old chipped brick. Maybe it’s just getting used to the change? The cleaning part is a win, though... no more dust sticking to crumbling mortar. Still, part of me gets what you mean about painted brick feeling a bit too perfect.
