Peel-and-stick tiles are best treated cautiously around any fireplace. Unless a product is explicitly rated for the temperatures at that location, keep it away from the active firebox and any hearth surface that gets hot. Many are decorative wall coverings rather than heat-resistant fireplace materials, and the adhesive can soften, discolor, or release with heat.
For a low-commitment update, a new removable screen or changes to the surrounding decor are safer options. To test a color or pattern, put a temporary sample on a cool adjacent wall rather than on the fireplace itself. Check the fireplace and surround clearances before adding anything combustible, even if the material is marketed as peel-and-stick.
