Why do built-in benches always look better than they feel?

I swear, every time I see those dreamy window seats or those sleek banquette setups in design magazines, I get all inspired. But then, when I actually sit on one at a friend’s place or in a restaurant, it’s like… why is my back at a weird angle? Or the seat’s too shallow, or there’s nowhere to put your feet. It’s like they’re made for looking at, not for actual sitting. Don’t even get me started on the ones with no cushions—just hard wood. I mean, am I missing something? Are there comfy built-ins out there, or is this just one of those “looks cool, feels meh” things? Curious if anyone’s found a design that doesn’t make you want to get up after five minutes.

I’ve used it under rugs and even between stacked furniture to keep things from shifting.

I actually tried those silicone grip pads under our window seat cushions. They’re a little grippier than shelf liner, but honestly, not a huge difference. If you’ve got kids bouncing around, they’ll still shift. For everyday use though, it’s less annoying than tape gunk.
