Proper prep definitely helps, but I'd say material choice is just as crucial. When we redid our basement, I spent ages researching eco-friendly insulation options that could handle moisture without breaking down. Ended up going with rigid foam boards because they're resistant to water absorption and mold growth—plus, they're easy to install yourself if you're careful about sealing the seams.

One thing I noticed is that even the best prep won't hold up forever if your materials aren't moisture-resistant. Had a neighbor who meticulously prepped his basement walls but used standard fiberglass insulation... after a couple of floods, he had to rip it all out due to mold issues. So yeah, prep matters, but pairing it with the right materials makes a huge difference long-term.

Couldn't agree more. I've seen plenty of basements where homeowners did everything right prep-wise but still ran into mold issues because of material choice. Rigid foam boards are a solid pick—I've had good experiences with them too. Curious though, has anyone tried spray foam insulation in flood-prone areas? Heard mixed things about its long-term performance with repeated moisture exposure...

I've used spray foam in a couple of basement remodels, and honestly, it held up better than I expected. But repeated flooding...not sure I'd trust it long-term. Anyone had luck combining spray foam with other moisture barriers?

I tried spray foam in a rental property once, thought I was a genius... until the basement flooded again. Let's just say it looked like someone microwaved marshmallows down there. After that disaster, I combined spray foam with a heavy-duty poly moisture barrier and drainage mats. Worked way better—no marshmallow apocalypse yet, knock on wood. Might be worth giving that combo a shot if you're dealing with recurring water issues.

Had a similar experience myself with spray foam—thought I'd nailed it until the first heavy rainstorm hit. Ended up with a basement that looked like a melted ice cream cake. Learned pretty quickly that foam alone isn't enough if water's a recurring issue. The poly barrier and drainage mats combo you mentioned is solid advice, but I'd also suggest checking your exterior grading and gutters. No insulation method will hold up long-term if water keeps pooling around your foundation... learned that one the hard way too.
