basement walls cracking - should I be worried?

Noticed some cracks forming in my basement walls lately, nothing huge but definitely noticeable. House is pretty old, built in the 50s, and I'm guessing the foundation might be settling or something. A friend mentioned underpinning as a possible fix, but honestly I don't know much about it. Is this something serious or just normal aging stuff? Would love some insight from anyone who's dealt with this kinda thing before.

I’d be cautious about jumping straight to underpinning based only on “noticeable” cracks. Before considering that kind of work, photograph and measure them periodically, noting the date and width, and check whether there’s water intrusion, bowing walls, horizontal displacement, or doors and windows starting to stick.

A small, stable vertical or stair-step crack can have a very different cause from a widening horizontal crack or one paired with wall movement. If any of those movement or moisture signs are present, it’s worth having a qualified structural engineer evaluate it rather than relying on a contractor’s repair recommendation alone.
