Painting crates is such a smart move—love that idea. I’ve actually used leftover spray paint on a couple and it made a huge difference, plus it hides all the scuffs from muddy shoes. I hear you on the pillow situation, though. I tried those outdoor storage benches for mine, but honestly, they just end up full of random stuff by July. Maybe I’ll just stick to swapping out a few plants each season... less hassle, more color.

Easy Ways To Refresh Your Porch Look Each Season

I totally get the struggle with outdoor storage benches. I bought one a couple years ago thinking it’d be the perfect spot for all my porch pillows and throws, but by mid-summer it’s just a graveyard for old dog toys and half-empty bags of potting soil. I’ve pretty much given up on keeping it organized.

Swapping out plants is honestly the most satisfying part for me too. I started doing a “rotation” where I’ll pick up whatever looks good at the nursery that month—sometimes it’s just a couple of bright annuals in cheap pots, sometimes it’s herbs or even a little tomato plant. It keeps things feeling fresh without a ton of effort or expense. Plus, if something doesn’t survive my neglect, I don’t feel too guilty about replacing it.

One thing I did last fall that made a big difference was adding a string of warm white lights around the porch railing. It sounds simple, but it really changed the vibe in the evenings—made it feel cozy even when the plants were looking a bit sad. And if you’re into painting crates, I’ve seen people stencil patterns or numbers on them for a more custom look. I tried stripes once and, well, let’s just say painter’s tape is not optional if you want straight lines.

Pillows are tricky outdoors unless you’re super disciplined about bringing them in every time it rains. I’ve started using those cheap indoor/outdoor rugs instead—they add color and pattern but dry out fast and don’t get gross as quickly as fabric stuff does.

Honestly, I think half the fun is experimenting and not worrying too much if something doesn’t work out. The porch is kind of my test lab for ideas that might be too bold for inside the house...

That storage bench thing is too real—I swear mine has become a black hole for random junk, and once something goes in there, it’s lost to the ages. I tried labeling baskets inside to keep stuff sorted, but now it’s just labeled chaos. At least the dog seems happy about the endless supply of “new” toys.

I’m with you on the plant rotation. I have a strict “no plant left behind” policy, which basically means if it’s still alive at the end of the season, it’s a miracle. I tried succulents one summer thinking they’d be low maintenance, but apparently even those need water sometimes... who knew? Now I just grab whatever’s on sale and hope for the best.

String lights are game changers. I wrapped some around an old ladder and leaned it in the corner—instant cozy. As for painting crates, I learned the hard way that freehand polka dots are much more forgiving than stripes. Painter’s tape or bust.

Outdoor pillows are my nemesis. I finally caved and bought a couple of those waterproof covers, but honestly, half the time they’re just piled in a corner because I forgot to bring them in before a storm. Rugs are way less work.

The storage bench is a trap—I hear you. I once found a Christmas ornament in mine in July, buried under a tangle of dog leashes and extension cords. Now I just accept it’s more of a time capsule than actual storage. As for plants, I’ve given up on anything fancy. My porch gets whatever looks half-alive at the garden center clearance rack, and if it survives, great. If not, compost.

I’m with you on pillows—they’re either soggy or missing entirely. I actually switched to using old wool army blankets as porch throws instead. They dry fast and don’t look too bad even when they’re a little rough around the edges. Rugs are definitely less hassle, especially the cheap indoor-outdoor ones you can hose off.

Honestly, I think storage benches are just black holes for random junk—totally agree there. I’ve started using labeled baskets instead, at least I can see what’s in them and they’re easier to move around when I want to swap things out for the season. About plants, clearance rack survivors are underrated. Sometimes those scraggly ones bounce back with a little love. As for porch throws, wool blankets are genius, but I still can’t quit the pillows... I just buy cheap covers and toss them in the wash every few weeks. It’s not perfect, but it works for now.
