Price Underground Garage Electrical Service Separately or With the Build?

I’m comparing bids for a detached garage and want the electrical scope priced clearly. The garage will be about 60 feet from the house, with a subpanel, general lighting and receptacles, and possible future EV charging and workshop equipment. I don’t want a contractor to assume the existing house panel has enough spare capacity without an electrical assessment.

Would you normally request the underground electrical feed as a separate quote, or have the garage contractor include it in the main construction bid? I’m concerned that a combined price may hide allowances, while separate pricing could create coordination problems between the electrician, excavator, and garage builder.

For a useful comparison, I’m planning to ask each bidder to identify:

- Load calculation and confirmation of available capacity at the existing service and house panel
- Feeder size, conduit type, wire specification, and detached-building subpanel
- Trench length, required depth, bedding, warning tape, conduit inspections, and backfill
- Utility locating, permit and inspection fees, and any service upgrade allowance
- Concrete, asphalt, landscaping, or other surface restoration after trenching
- Extra cost for EV charging, a compressor, welder, or other higher-demand equipment
- Responsibility for coordinating the electrical inspection with the garage construction schedule

For those who have reviewed similar bids, which line items were most often omitted or treated as allowances? Is it better to have the electrical contractor quote the complete feeder and trenching scope directly, with the garage contractor coordinating it, or should one general contractor remain responsible for the entire package?
