How often do you actually need to clean your gutters?

Twice a year works for me too, but I’ve noticed with my old gutters, even that’s sometimes not enough.

Pine needles are the worst, they sneak through everything.
Couldn’t agree more—those things clog the downspouts fast. I started using a plumber’s snake to clear out the elbows, especially after storms. It’s tedious but beats water damage. Mesh guards just collect debris on top for me, so I ditched them.

Those pine needles are the bane of my existence. I live under a couple of massive white pines, and I swear they drop more needles than the tree has branches. I used to think gutter guards were the answer, but like you said, all they did was create a mat of needles on top. Looked tidy from the ground, but then the water just ran right over and pooled next to my foundation. Not ideal.

I’ve tried the plumber’s snake trick too, especially for those weirdly angled elbows that seem to attract every bit of debris in a five-mile radius. One year, after a big storm, I pulled out what looked like a squirrel’s nest from one of them—no squirrel, thankfully. It’s not glamorous work, but it’s better than dealing with a flooded basement.

Twice a year is my baseline, but in the fall I usually end up doing a quick check every month or so, just because those needles keep coming. Sometimes I’ll even run a hose through to make sure everything’s flowing. It’s kind of become part of my routine—like raking leaves, but on a ladder and with more cursing.

Funny thing is, my neighbor swears by those foam inserts you shove into the gutter, but I can’t see how that wouldn’t just turn into a soggy mess. Maybe it depends on your trees? Either way, it seems like there’s no real shortcut if you’ve got pines nearby… just more creative ways to get dirty.
