How often do you actually need to clean your gutters?

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve found a random tennis ball or chunk of shingle wedged in a gutter—stuff you’d never spot from the ground. I try to check mine every spring and fall, but honestly, after a big storm, I’ll give ‘em a quick look too. Not every job needs to be perfect, but ignoring those hidden spots can bite you later. Learned that the hard way after water started dripping into my sunroom... never again.

I hear you on the surprise gutter finds—last year I pulled out a plastic dinosaur and half a bird’s nest. Never would’ve guessed either was up there. Here’s what’s worked for me, trying to keep costs down:

- I stick to spring and fall for a full clean, but if we get a big windstorm or heavy rain, I’ll at least walk around and check for overflow or weird drips.
- One time I skipped a season thinking it’d be fine... ended up with water backing up and staining my living room ceiling. That repair cost way more than just grabbing a ladder would’ve.
- I don’t always do a perfect job—sometimes it’s just clearing the worst of it—but even that helps.
- If you’re on a budget, those cheap gutter guards from the hardware store can help cut down on the junk that gets in there, but they’re not foolproof.

Honestly, it’s one of those chores that feels like overkill until you skip it and regret it later. Not glamorous, but definitely worth the hassle.

I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve actually had decent luck stretching it to once a year on some of my rentals—especially the ones without big trees nearby. Not saying it’s risk-free, but if you’ve got newer gutters and minimal overhang, sometimes you can get away with less frequent cleanings. I do agree about the gutter guards being hit or miss. Had a tenant stuff plastic mesh in there once and it actually made things worse... ended up with a mini pond. Just depends on the property, I guess.

That’s hilarious—well, unless you’re the one bailing out the “pond.” I tried those foam gutter inserts once, thinking I was clever. Turns out, squirrels thought they were snacks. Now I just schedule a fall cleaning and cross my fingers.

- Tried those gutter guards too—ended up with more mess than before.
- I’ve got a 1920s place with mature oaks, so I’m out there every fall and spring at least.
- Anyone else notice old houses seem to collect more debris, or is that just me?
