How often do you actually need to clean your gutters?

I get where you’re coming from, but I’ve actually had decent luck with the mesh guards—maybe it’s just the type I used? They still need cleaning, but I only had to do it once last year. Could be that my trees drop bigger leaves instead of needles, though. Twice a year seems a bit much unless your gutters really fill up fast. Just depends on what’s overhead, I guess.

Yeah, I get what you mean about it depending on what’s above your roof. I’ve only just started dealing with gutter stuff myself, and honestly, I was kind of dreading it. My neighbor swears by those mesh guards too, but my place has a couple of big maples that dump a ton of leaves every fall. First year here, I skipped cleaning until late November and ended up with a mini swamp in the gutters—lesson learned.

Twice a year sounded like overkill to me at first, but after that mess, I’m not risking it again. Maybe it’s overdoing it if you don’t have a lot of debris, but for some setups it really does make sense. Sounds like you’ve got a good balance going if once a year works for you. I guess there’s no one-size-fits-all answer… just gotta figure out what keeps the water flowing and the headaches away.

- I totally underestimated how much a couple of trees can mess with gutters. My first fall in this house, I figured, “Eh, how bad can it get?” Turns out, pretty bad. Ended up with a waterfall over the front steps after the first big rain.

- Mesh guards are tempting, but I’ve heard mixed things—like, they keep out leaves but sometimes smaller stuff still gets through and then you have to clean under the mesh anyway. Not sure if that’s less work or just a different kind of hassle.

- For me, I’m trying to stick to a twice-a-year schedule: once after most of the leaves drop, and again in spring just to be safe. Probably overkill for some people, but I’d rather do that than deal with soggy mulch in the downspouts.

- Agree there’s no universal answer. If you’ve got pine needles, maples, or anything that sheds like crazy, it’s just part of the homeownership fun. If your yard’s mostly clear, maybe once a year is fine... but I’d still check after a big storm just in case.

- Honestly, if someone invents self-cleaning gutters, I’ll be first in line. Until then, it’s ladders and gloves for me.

I hear you on the trees—my old maple drops enough every fall to clog a city’s worth of gutters. I tried mesh guards once, but they just made it harder to fish out the gunk that did get through. Twice a year seems about right for me too, but I’ve always wondered: does anyone actually hire out for this, or is everyone just braving the ladder themselves?
