I hear you on the old house funk. Mine’s got brick walls and the basement always smells like wet earth, no matter what I do. I tried sealing up cracks and running a dehumidifier, but it’s like the smell is baked in. Sometimes I think these places just come with their own “vintage” scent you can’t scrub out.

I totally get what you mean—there’s something about old brick and dirt basements that just hangs in the air, no matter what fancy gadget you throw at it. I once worked on a 1920s bungalow with a cellar that smelled like a cross between wet leaves and antique books. We tried every trick, but honestly, the smell kind of became part of its charm after a while. I guess some “vintage” scents are just stubborn like that…
