helmet saved biker in crazy crash - thoughts?

Just saw this news story about a motorcyclist who walked away from a nasty crash thanks to his helmet. Kinda makes me rethink how seriously I take my gear, you know? Curious if anyone else caught this and had the same reaction.

- Had a similar wake-up call last summer. Was just doing a quick ride to the hardware store, figured I'd skip the heavy gear since it's close by.
- Ended up sliding out on some gravel - nothing major, but my helmet took a solid scrape. Definitely made me rethink the whole "short trip, no gear" mindset.
- Now I don't even hop on for a quick errand without at least helmet and gloves. Better safe than sorry, right?

Yeah, I totally get this. Couple years back I was just running down to the local nursery - literally a five-minute ride - to grab some mulch bags. Figured I'd skip the gloves and jacket since it was warm and close by. Ended up having to brake hard when someone backed out without looking... nothing serious happened, but it shook me up enough to reconsider. Now it's helmet, gloves, and at least a sturdy jacket every single time. It's just not worth risking it for convenience.
