Rock gardens and wildflowers: Colorado town’s new approach to slope erosion
Ended up pulling it all out and going with a mix of river rock and wildflower seed. Way cheaper, looks better, and I don’t have to risk my neck mowing.
That’s the way to do it. I’ve seen way too many folks throw down weed barrier thinking it’s a magic fix, but like you said, one good storm and it’s halfway up the hill or torn to shreds. Plus, those barriers rarely stop the tough weeds—bindweed laughs at that stuff.
River rock with wildflowers is a solid combo for slopes. The rocks help with runoff, and once the flowers get established, their roots do a lot more for holding soil than any fabric ever could. Only thing I’d add is, if you’re in an area with a lot of runoff, make sure you use larger rocks or anchor them somehow—otherwise you’ll be chasing them down the street after a big rain.
I’ve had clients try mulch too, but on a slope? It just slides right off. Wildflowers take patience, but once they’re in, you barely have to touch it. Maintenance-free is the dream... unless you count pulling the occasional thistle.
I get the appeal of river rock and wildflowers—definitely looks better than a torn-up weed barrier or a patchy mulch job. But does anyone else worry about the long-term with river rock? I’ve flipped a couple places where the rocks ended up sinking into the soil or getting buried under debris after a few years. Then you’re left with this half-visible mess that’s a pain to clean up.
Also, wildflowers are great for low maintenance, but I’ve seen them get overtaken by invasive stuff if you’re not on top of it, especially early on. Maybe that’s just my luck, but I always wonder if it’s really “maintenance-free” in the long run. Anyone tried terracing or using those concrete blocks on steeper slopes? I’ve had better luck with that for erosion, though it’s definitely more work up front. Just seems like there’s always a tradeoff—less mowing, but maybe more weeding or rock wrangling down the line...
River rock looks great at first but yeah, I’ve had to dig out buried rock more than once—total pain. Wildflowers aren’t “set and forget” either, especially that first year. Has anyone tried those geogrid mats under the rock to keep it from sinking? Wondering if that’s worth the extra cost.
